Know what actually needs protection

A world folder is only part of the picture. Plugin configurations, whitelist files, permission data, and custom assets can be just as important as the map itself. If you restore only terrain but lose your management data, your server still suffers downtime and confusion.

List the directories that matter before you need an emergency restore. That list becomes your backup scope.

Back up before changes, not after regret

Always create or verify a backup before major plugin updates, permission changes, map imports, or file cleanup. Waiting until after a failed change defeats the purpose.

A strong habit is to pair every risky action with a known recovery point. That includes bulk plugin installations and manual file edits over SFTP.

• Take a pre-update backup.
• Label the backup with the purpose of the change.
• Verify that the backup actually contains the needed files.

Practice restoration before a crisis

The worst time to learn your backup is incomplete is during a live outage. Test your restore process on a non-critical copy or maintenance window so you understand the order of operations.

A backup routine only deserves trust when it has been proven end to end.
