Measure the right problem first

Not every complaint labeled as lag is actually server lag. Some issues come from player connection quality, client-side mod conflicts, or poor chunk-loading habits. The first step is separating real server load from general frustration.

Check what changed recently. New plugins, larger farms, expanded worlds, and more aggressive mob settings are common triggers.

Trim the sources of constant work

A server performs best when background work is intentional. Unused plugins, oversized view distance, runaway redstone, and misconfigured logging can all force the machine to spend resources on tasks players barely value.

Reducing constant workload is usually safer than trying to tune around it forever.

  • Remove unused plugins.
  • Review view distance and simulation distance.
  • Limit unnecessary farms or automation abuse.
  • Clean up test worlds and abandoned assets.

Upgrade only after cleanup

More resources help, but upgrades are most effective after waste has been reduced. Otherwise you are spending extra capacity to preserve bad habits.
